What to do? BBQ!

The summer heat is upon us and what better way to celebrate than to have a BBQ. In all honesty, I started barbecuing before the summer officially started but who cares, summer is here and that’s all that counts.

For many years I have been using gas systems for the BBQ because it’s convenient. But as of last year I have been using more and more of the charcoal variety instead of the gas and what a difference it makes. It took me a bit of getting used but once I got the knack of it there was not stopping me.
Got myself one of those kettle style grills and yes I could have gone nuts and bought myself one of those mega large kettles but I’m not grilling for a team so why bother. Besides, I want to get my grilling down before splurging.

If you have never barbecued on a kettle grill then I suggest that you go out and try it. There are a few models that can be found cheap at the hardware stores and it does the job well, it doesn’t have to be one of the more popular ones like weber, big green egg or old smokey. Once you get the hang of it then go on and have yourself a real grilling party. I found that it really helps to use a chimney when dealing with briquettes and charcoal, it makes it that much easier. If you’re not sure what I mean by chimney then do a bit of research and find out. If you don’t want to research it then I’ll tell you.

A chimney is basically a metal pipe (think stove pipe) with a handle that has space at the bottom for some flammable material, like paper and the top portion is filled with briquettes and charcoal. You basically light the paper at the bottom and it will create a ton of smoke for a brief while and in a few minutes you get hot coals! Grab it by the handle and not the body. You can also check out the embedded video below.

So what should I grill? Everything! I like the usual suspects when it comes to grilling, steak, pork chops, chicken, veggies, kebabs of all kinds, basically whatever you want. The only thing I wouldn’t try is cake, I don’t think cake grills to well but I could be wrong, maybe I can ask the folks at America’s Test Kitchen to try it, they’ll probably find a way to make it work. Hmmm…grilled cake.

Grill my pretties, grill!

Grill my pretties, grill!

Ever have one of those evenings where you’re just watching a bit of late night TV and then the earth starts to rumble. The first thought would be to bang on the ceiling or walls and tell the people next door to keep it down. Unfortunately I no longer live in an apartment and the rumbling was not caused by humans nor by my fat cat jumping off the chair.
It was an earthquake, but this earthquake was not as serious as Haiti or Chile, not the same at all. The cats bolted and the house shook, it was an earthquake. The epicenter of the quake was not that far from the house, close to the small town of Brownsburg-Chatham, I’d say about 28 or so kilometers away (that would be around 17+ miles). It’s not like I haven’t felt tremors, I’ve experienced those but this was different. This was a whip crack sound followed by a sonic boom and a shake and bake showing 3.9 on the Richter scale. As I said it’s nothing compared to the Haiti or Chile quakes but it was enough to get me concerned.

So, I’ve been busy…

So I’ve been a bit busy and it was due to a little bit of renovating for the girlfriend. The kitchen was looking a little drab and she decided that it was time for a change but instead of letting her swap out all that real wood for some fake wood I convinced her to refinish instead. It would prove to be a challenge for her but she plowed on through and the end result is fantastic. She learned a few things in the process but she can honestly say that she partook in refinishing and remodeling her kitchen. It wasn’t instant and there were some headaches but overall the transformation looks great.

I built her a bottom cabinet to extend the countertop on the left side of the stove, you can tell in the pics how much counter real-estate she now has compared to before. I also split apart the pantry and the corner display to make room for a workstation space, she loved that idea. Everything in the kitchen was re-done, floor tile, backsplash, paint, stain and counter top. So there you go, I was busy and so was she but the place looks great.

For next winter…

Ah ha! One thing I love about my job is being able to research things and while researching some computer technology I stumbled upon this, I don’t know what this has to do with computers but it was there. I have had my share of ice dams and yes I am up there on the roof at least twice a year shoveling, pushing, throwing snow to avoid those blasted dams but they eventually form. More vents will be installed this year but I will get the Avalanche just in case the venting is not a 100 percent fix. My neighbor in front has venting but he too falls victim to the dreaded ice dam.

Icicle are pretty but can be of great concern

Anyone else ready for spring?

Spring is around the corner! But it’s a really long corner.

I remember looking out the window last March and thinking to myself, “Wow, that’s some serious snow out there.” There was about 5 feet of the white stuff on the lawn and it was quite the site. I remember being in the kitchen and hearing the rumble of the snow clearing crew trying to do their best clearing the sides of the street, making enough room so that 2 cars could pass. Winter of 2008 would be unforgettable but winter 2009 would also be unforgettable.

This winter we had some serious cold spells, cold enough to probably freeze the balls on a brass monkey. If you never heard that term then look it up, it’s not what you would think. If you have heard it before then great, we’re on the same page. But the freezing temperatures weren’t the only thing I had to deal with this winter.

Like the past four winters, I ended up clearing the roof of snow. I remember the neighbors looking at me funny the first year doing it. But I do remember a while back, a friends neighbor had their roof collapse due to excessive snow build up and I really did not want that to happen to me. No one ever bothered me but last year when the reports of roofs collapsing hit the news, well let’s just say that last year I wasn’t the only person to be up and clearing. The one thing I did not clear this year was the car shelter and after some heavy snowfall followed by some heavy rain, the poor metal and plastic  just couldn’t handle the load and it collapsed. Luckily I was not underneath or else I would have been in real trouble. My own stupidity really, I had seen the amount of snow building up but delayed it for another day and another and another until it couldn’t take another day. It took a bit of time to clean up and a lesson was learned that day.
