Parking…doh!

I always wondered why anyone who parallel parks badly would leave their car parked badly and unless I stop a person and ask them I guess I’ll never know. I don’t expect people to parallel park perfectly but I do expect people to stay on the street. I know most people have at one point or another seen someone else partially parallel park their car on the sidewalk, not the whole car but a part of it.
Maybe I over analyze it but I figure that if you see you have parked your car incorrectly and you walk away from it then it tells me that you don’t care. This also tells me about your driving ability and skills. If you are lacking the ability and skills then chances are you should not be driving. If a person doesn’t care about how they park then how do you know they care about the things around them when driving. Think about that while you are driving, texting, talking, drinking coffee and changing the songs on the mp3 player.
I don’t assume anything on the road, everyone around me is a potential danger and living in the province of Quebec, well that holds true. There are a great deal of drivers and motorcycle riders that think they are pro’s, they are the ones usually speeding and zig-zagging through traffic. They are a mix of young and old, men and women, black and white, domestic and foreign, cats and dogs. Maybe not the last one but you get my point. I witness this type of “pro” driving everyday, whether I am riding my motorcycle or driving my truck. Spike strip anyone?
Where was I? Ah yes…parallel parking! Sorry I get off topic once in a while.
Yes, parallel parking is easy to some and a complete panic for others. I’ve seen some real nasty ones where a good half of the car is up on the sidewalk while others park about 3 feet from the sidewalk. There is a technique and once you know it and understand it then parallel parking is a breeze. You can’t be too far or too close to the curb. I have friends admitting that parallel parking for them is a complete nightmare and I tell them that they should practice it b/c practice makes perfect. Some get it and some will just not parallel park unless the space in question is big enough for 3 1976 Cadillac Eldorado convertibles to fit in (app 56 ft). Yes, that’s probably an exaggeration but at the same time it’s not.
If you can’t park it proper then try again until it is, that’s if you care enough.

Close but no cigar!

Close but no cigar!

SAAQ still sux

I don’t mind people getting bonuses from doing good work, hard work at that. But to hear that the SAAQ will be giving hefty bonuses to some of their executives for doing extraordinary work is a big pile of croc crap. That’s right, crocs can crap.

A few years ago the SAAQ said they were in a deficit and were in danger of losing even more money. The solution for this was to jack up the prices of everything including drivers licenses and vehicle registration, especially motorcycle registrations. I’ve ranted on these quite a bit, you can check my past rants.
The president of the SAAQ said his people (his executives) worked real hard for their bonuses. Apparently, he told them that if they worked harder they would be rewarded (cha-ching!) and that is how he got them to work harder. Take a look at some of the bonus figures given by CJAD 800 radio. I’m not the only person upset, the Comité d’action politique motocycliste (CAPM) is upset too, you can read that here and here (must read and understand french for both).
It’s kind of coincidental that these people are getting bonuses while motorcyclists are paying higher registration fees, nah! I don’t think this is coincidence at all. Am I upset, you betcha and should I be, you betcha and you should too if you live in the province of Quebec. Am I upset because I ride a motorcycle and have to pay that much more to register my motorcycle, you betcha. I am more upset to hear that these people are getting bonuses for supposedly “working hard”, I wonder how many days and nights they spent “working hard”. I remember a good while back when I averaged 70 hours a week for about 7 months, no one ever gave me a bonus, maybe I should have worked for the SAAQ. nah!
So what to do with all this, well I don’t know, I’m hoping that Godzilla will come up from the ocean depths and squash these SAAQ rat b@stards. Or maybe they’ll be lucky enough to get hit by one of the many cyclists that ignore the rules of the road (read this).
Of course none of that matters because the SAAQ’s el presidente is apparently going to retire soon, I’d retire too if I “worked hard” like he did. I wonder what they’ll do if they should get into a deficit again, oh wait! They’ll jack up the motorcycle registration again.

Gas this and brake that

Toyota recalls and blah blah blah. It’s not that I don’t care but really, I don’t care. It’s a recall and because it’s gone global it’s big news. At the same time, I think some people are going way out there saying that Toyota should give them a gazillion dollars for the misinformation and inconvenience that this has caused them.

I was reading a few news bits and bites and there were quite a few on the Toyota thing and one caught my attention . Basically, it mentions how one lady crashed her Echo because her accelerator got stuck and yap yap yap. Well, it would be great and everything except her car is not on the recall list and it’s a 2004 Echo, the Echo does not have the pedal problem. The systems affected are drive-by-wire systems aka-ETCS, check here for a detailed explanation by Popular Mechanics. As for the Toyota Echo, it’s a model that has had few if any serious problems but don’t quote me on that b/c I really didn’t check but I do know that it does NOT have a drive-by-wire system (ETCS). Now, I’m not saying that it’s not possible but I think that maybe, just maybe, the lady may have mistakenly pressed on the accelerator instead of the brake or it may have gotten caught on the floor mat, see the Edmunds video below. But I wasn’t there so I can’t say for sure.
Anyways, I think this is one of those stories where the person is trying to get onto the “Sue Toyota Bandwagon!” because of their own error. Hey everyone makes mistakes but should we sue someone else b/c of our own errors? Well…

So, the lady tells her story and so on and like all the stories I have heard, even with the runaway Prius, none of these drivers knew what to do. Let me tell you a little story:

Before I had my truck I had a car, I won’t mention the brand but I will say that it was another Japanese brand and a fairly fun zoom zoom type of brand, if that’s not obvious then go watch some commercials. The car was about 10 years old and some problems were starting but it didn’t matter b/c I was going to get a pickup truck. So I am at stop light in the car with my foot on the brake pedal and the engine starts to creep up in rpm’s. Next thing I know the motor is up to 2200 rpm’s and it wants to go but the brakes are holding it in place. The light goes green and I am off and realize that the engine is not idling down. I wasn’t sure if the brakes would be enough to stop at the next intersection so I put the car in neutral to aid in stopping. Sure, the engine is revving but at least the car will stop. Every car has a neutral and for those that don’t look as though they have a neutral, well guess again, they do. Look @ the Prius video below and you’ll see.

Alright, let me slow things down.
Everyone seems to forget that other car companies had recalls and problems. Ford with those pesky Firestones (bad bad Firestone), GM with their executives etc. Maybe there were more severe problems but the public was just kept in the dark, that’s because social networking and the inter-web weren’t invented yet, or was it? Dum dee dum dum.
Is Toyota sorry for what is happening, yes they are. Are they trying their best to resolve the problem, yes they are.  Is it better to suggest that they go out of business? Some seem to think so. Something is being done and Toyota is still taking the body blows and jabs for it but to continue on and drag them through the mud and stones and tar and crap and sludge and cow dung and blah blah blag is just ridiculous. They have put  ads on TV apologizing for what has happened and trying to reassure the public that they are doing their best. I think Toyota learned their lesson and I don’t think they’ll be making this mistake again. If you made a mistake how far would everyone else take it?

Marching along

It’s March and there is work to do. Not just at work but in other places too. I guess I need that or I’d be bored. It’s nice to have stuff to do, if not I’d be on the porch with a shotgun aiming at squirrels.

There is all this work at work and then more work outside of work and apparently some of my colleagues are in the same boat. Except that my colleagues definition of doing work outside of work is hiring a contractor to do the work (how many more times can I write “work”) lifting the phone to talk to the contractor tires them out. Unlike my comrades, I do all the manual labor, learned all that from my father, he was a contractor for a million years (exaggerated for effect). I guess it’s the way I was brought up, “here take this wrench and wrench something, go go go!” My father never actually said that, when he was fixing the car it was more like “pass me the 11/16″ socket and the .0025 inch feeler gauge”. I knew what the socket was but unfamiliar with the feeler gauge. Contrary to my belief, a feeler gauge had nothing to do with feelings, the things you find out at 10 years of age. What was my point in all this?

Ah yes, all this work I have to do. I guess in the end it’s stuff that I have to do and it should be done. There have been a few things that I have put off due to bad weather; in the end I can no longer blame it on the rain. I believe that was an eighties song. So back to this whole work thing.
Other than house stuff, one of the things I need to work on is the restoration of my Yamaha YX600 (that’s a motorcycle, for those who aren’t in the know). It has been neglected and I feel bad because when I look at how she once was and what she is now, well, it brings tears to my eyes ~sniff. I plan to fix her up so that she starts and rides well and then do some aesthetic work, change the look a little but not too much. It should be fun and a pain in the rear from past experience on other projects, nonetheless it should be fun. You can see below how the Yamaha looked many years ago, she was a beauty. In case anyone was wondering, the seat was custom made, the round headlight replaced the stock square one and the fairing was added. The stock air-box was removed and washable air filters were added instead. I couldn’t take a present photo to show the world b/c people would call me a murderer. Actually motorcyclists would call me a murderer for letting it get to the state that it’s in. Well, time to get cracking and push myself to do it, that’s all.

And now…

it’s time to get back to all this work @ work. Fun.

What 3M luck!

One of the great things about my truck is that Ford/Mazda made many of them so finding parts is easy but can be pricey at times. My Mazda B3000 is a 2000 model and the headlights were hazy, very weathered and dull. I thought about getting new headlights but they were pricey. The truck is showing signs of rust in a few spots, it’s not serious. I think of my vehicle as a tool and tend not to worry about the body work too much, rust is a fact of life around here.

Where was I?

Yes, the headlights. The headlights are not glass, it’s a polycarbonate lens and they have gotten scratched and weathered over the years and no longer don the light as they once did and I need to see at night. Someone tells me that there is a place that buffs out these polycarb lenses so that they look new again but these people were charging something ridiculous to buff out the lenses. So I peruse the internet and come across a few things and one of them was the 3M headlight restoration kit the other was a skin site about midgets, don’t ask. I was a tad skeptical but decided to research a bit more and happened upon the 3M headlight kit and the youtube video. This video was the deciding factor because it was done by the dudes at Two Guys Garage. Not only did they have the same color and model truck as mine but they also had the same work stool, it was a sign. I watched the video and the results were great. I got to see what my faded headlights could potentially look like.
I went to my local auto parts store and bought the 3M kit and did the headlights. I couldn’t believe my eyes, it worked! I did have a moment of skepticism but that faded once I finished one side. This product is a bit pricey but it depends on how you look at it or how you look at it, get it? Let me explain.
I bought it on sale @ 24.99$cdn, regular was 29.99$cdn, so it would be ~12$ per headlight, not too shabby. Even at 29.99$cdn I still would have purchased it. The place that restores the headlights charges 25$-50$ per headlight, minimum 2 headlights, so 50$-100$. The way I look at it, I still win @ 24.99$. The only way I would have wasted that 24.99$ is if I had screwed up the process but that didn’t happen.
I didn’t have my camera with me so I did not take any photos or videos but take a gander at how Two Guys Garage did it, it was a sign from the wrench gods and I don’t regret it.
